Update 4/16/11

We clapped, yelled and cried as the winners were announced Saturday afternoon at Loxley City Hall when Monica Mitta (Fairhope) and Andrew Peturis (Daphne) were declared the first place winners of our South Alabama, Regional Contest.

Danny, Charlene, Beth, Ileene and I were there. Our kids won against Optimist clubs from Montgomery, Mobile, etc. We believe that this was due to their skill and hard work, the special talent that God gave them and the help that they received at school and the practice speeches that they made at our Optimist club, City council, Toastmasters, etc.

We still can't believe it, our boy and girl both won!. So they will go and we will, also,  to Shreveport on 4/30 and at the dinner on Saturday night, where 4 boys and 4 girls will compete. All they need to do is beat the best kid from Louisana, Mississippi and Upper Alabama and win the $2500 scholarships. And they will!

So, some of you conducted parts of the contests, or judged or brought refreshments or came to the contest or brought contestants to speak and we want to say thanks to you because when these two kids talk about this there is a strange look of confidence, surprise and wonder on their faces. They know they have something special.

After they won, when Monica came up she talked about how good the other speakers were and it sounded like it was a tie and she was just lucky.  Andrew expressed gratitude to his Optimist friends for being there for him and congratulated the other speakers.

We are so proud. Submitted by Ben and Ileen Spencer
